"Coil Technology (surfboard)"

Broken down to the basics, Coil technology is the vacuum-lamination of an EPS foam core to engineer better flex, better durability, and better ride into a  hand-shaped board.  Developed by Kirk and Eric Brasington, the Coil process first involves a light-weight stringerless EPS core, hand-shaped to stock or custom spec and engineered to sprinkle flex, tension, and torsion in all the right places.

"Montaj" DVD Review

Although it has been a number of years since the release of this movie, the surfing in it is as electric and cutting edge as it has ever been. I have to say that among all the videos that I have seen, this is my absolute favorite, hands-down. If it is possible to wear out a DVD from playing it, this disk will be the first one to become a beer-coaster. More.....

"First Chapter" DVD review

About a year ago while traveling for business I was stuck in a series of long airline delays. Luckily I had a bunch of surf DVDs with me, a laptop, and internet access, so I had something to help me make it through the 10 hours of delays I had to endure. One of these videos was “First Chapter”, featuring Dane Reynolds. Holy crap he can surf; up until the point I saw this movie, I had only seen him presented as an “up-and-coming” grom coming of age in some magazine pictures and short video clips online. Watching this film made me realize he was no longer an up-and-comer, but someone who had become ther here-and-now of progressive surfing. More....

FCS 3D Red Tip (fin)

I recently rode a FCS 3D Red Tip in place of my usual center fin. The surf was pretty weak, lots of flat spots in the waves that required long connections that are usually not a problem on the particular board I was riding (see the 50/50 Waveskate review). But, it did not quite do what I expected or hoped. Instead of creating a lifty, speedy feeling in the tail as I expected, it actually anchored it down a bit more. Felt a bit draggy on the takeoff and I felt like I lost the ability to skate or pop over the gutless sections and into the next desirable section down the line.  More.....

50/50 Waveskate surfboard

These boards are shaped out of California by cross-over skateboarder/surfer/shaper/artist Ben Wei. They made some press a few years back, but I have not heard much of them since except the occasional sighting in punked-out surf vids featuring aerialist anti-establishment surfers.

5’7” x 20” x 2 3/8” Very flat deck brings a lot of foam out to the rails, so it feels much thicker than that last measurement suggests. Thick, “hockey puck” lookin’ roundtail. More....

6'2 Firewire Surfboard Review

A few months ago I purchased a 6’2” Firewire “Flexfire”.  These boards are a wholly different construction than your standard “poly” board (a polyurethane (PU) blank glassed with polyester (PE) resin) or hand-shaped “epoxy” board (an expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS) blank with epoxy glassing).  Instead of being shaped from a single blank or block of foam with a stringer in the center, Firewires have a very light-weight EPS core with thick but light wood stringers that are laid up on the outside of the blank (perimiter stringers). MVG (Multi Vortex Generator)

MVGs are based on the caudal finlets (Hint:  search Google images for “caudal finlets”) of tuna, which are among the fastest fish in the sea.  These fish, weighing hundreds to over one-thousand pounds, can not only swim in excess of 40mph in an extremely dense medium (water is approximately 800x denser than air), but are also extremely maneuverable at speed, able to turn on a time to persue prey or elude predators.
